Meet the Team: Tim Barnes

Meet our new Wholesale Account Rep Tim Barnes! While Tim only started working with us earlier this year, we’ve known Tim for some time after outfitting his Wrangler with some Lazer Star Lights. Tim is a man of many interests and we’re excited to have him on board to work with our dealers and spread the Lazer Star gospel!

Tim’s journey into powersports began with his first quad ride at age 14, and his love for the sport intensified with regular family trips out to Gordons Wells and Glamis Dunes. Tim also learned to fly as a teenager and earned his pilot’s license before earning a BS in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. A minor in Business Administration helped him co-found two businesses after college: a private aircraft charter operator and a real estate company.

We got to know Tim a few years back when he set his Jeep Wrangler up with Lazer Star Lights, eager to explore the off-road world at all hours of the day (and night). Tim came on as our Wholesale Account Representative in April 2014 to help expand the Lazer Star dealer network and work with all of our resellers to improve their businesses through an enhanced relationship with Lazer Star. On a daily basis, Tim works to provide quality dealer support with the end goal of achieving higher sales through brand awareness, marketing and customer satisfaction.

Outside of work Tim is a firm believer that life is more fun with the wind in your face and the sun overhead. He enjoys skydiving and holds the highest level license (D License - Master). He is also a big fan of jet skiing and wakeboarding as well as riding ATVs. When Tim's not out on the road for work he resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Drop Tim a line at Tim@LazerStarLights.com.

Lazer Star Lights Racers Tackle the Baja 500

The Lazer Star Lights supported race teams of Derek and Jason Murray and Matt Lovell headed down to Ensenada, Mexico last weekend to compete in the legendary SCORE Tecate Baja 500. Lovell has faced many challenges this year being forced out of several races, while the Murrays have managed to make a run at the SCORE UTV Class title.

Lazer Star Lights / Matt Lovell Racing #724

Matt Lovell and co-driver Joe started toward the front of the 7 class in their Lazer Star Lights / Matt Lovell Racing mid-size trophy truck and got off to a promising start. “The truck was running great and we were able to hit some good speeds,” Lovell said after the race. “Then about ten miles in we hit a water crossing and it must have arced the fuel pump, because we lost power and were dumping smoke.” Lovell was forced pull over to look for the source of the problem. After a thorough check and a replacement fuel pump, the truck was up and running in good form once again.

A half hour delay at any point in the race is troublesome, but a delay just miles from the starting line meant that Lovell was passed by dozens of vehicles as they worked under the hood. Lovell was able to make up some ground and pass some of the slower vehicles, but severe bottlenecks meant more lost time. After getting towed out of a silt bed, the #724 truck lost a brake line. Of course this came right before a technical section of the course that ran through the mountains. Thirty miles of downshifting and engine braking later they were out of the mountains and on their way to Checkpoint 2. Upon arrival, Matt and Joe were told by SCORE officials that they had missed the cut-off by eight minutes. Dozens of cars that had been held up at bottlenecks were not allowed to continue, so unfortunately the race ended there for Matt and the Lazer Star Lights / MLR truck.

A run of bad luck like this would dampen the spirits of any professional racer, but Matt is grateful to be where he is. His outlook is positive and he looks forward to preparing for the BITD Vegas to Reno in August. “To put in that much time and preparation and not be allowed to finish the race was frustrating,” Lovell said. “But we’ve got a lot of time to prep for Vegas to Reno, so we’re going to put our heads down and give it all we got. On the bright side, one of our chase vehicles broke down on the drive back to California, so I got to drive the race truck for about 80 miles up the highway.”

Team Murray Racing #1917

Team Murray came into the Baja 500 tied for the points lead in the SCORE UTV class, but all eyes were on Jason Murray as he made his return to racing. For the first time since sustaining a hand injury at King of the Hammers in February, Jason sat behind the wheel of the #1917 Can-Am Maverick and pulled up to the starting line. Along with co-driver Monte Aldrich, Jason got off to a pretty good start, and despite running into a couple of bottlenecks in the first leg managed to work his way up to second place by the time they rolled into the pit at mile 80. The Can-Am was running strong and without issues, and by the time Jason and Monte hit the second pit at mile 170 had settled into 5th place.

“Jason did a great job, had a little bit of pain and swelling but toughed it out and kept his focus,” Derek Murray said after the race. “He’s happy to be back, that’s for sure, so we’ll just make sure he continues his rehab work gets ready for Vegas to Reno.” Derek and co-driver Steve Amarine took over at the second pit at mile 170, and after moving up and positioning themselves to pass into 3rd place came upon another bottleneck. At one point a truck had gotten stuck with no options to pass, so they were forced to wait an hour and half before the truck made it out.

Derek was making up ground when they approached yet another logjam, and after attempting an alternate route tipped over on a drop-off. They eventually got the UTV flipped and took off, but after losing fluids in the tip-over had to run a long stretch of the race basically dry. Team Murray crossed the finish line in 7th place at about 4:00am, about 16 hours after they had started the race. “Our Lazer Star Lights were incredible,” Derek remarked. “We ran a 50” LED bar up on the roof and a 20” LED bar on the bumper, and we had better visibility at night than we did during the day. It makes a huge difference in our confidence and gives us an edge over the competition when we can push as hard as we can at night.”

The 7th place finish dropped them back to 2nd place in the season standings. Two more races remain to capture the 2014 SCORE UTV Class Championship: the Desert Challenge (September 25-28) and the Baja 1000 (November 12-16). In the meantime, Derek, Jason and the Team Murray crew will regroup and prepare for the BITD Vegas to Reno in August.

Lazer Star Lights Expands Race Program with Weller Racing and Funco Motorsports

Lazer Star Lights has just expanded their race program to include Lucas Oil Off Road Pro 4 driver Corry Weller. Along with Funco Motorsports drivers Garrett and Chad George, Weller Racing will be representing Lazer Star for the rest of the 2014 Lucas Oil season.

Weller Racing
With an origin story like so many in the motorsports industry, Weller Racing started from humble beginnings in Jason Weller's garage in 2006. The company has quickly grown and is now produces some of the best SXS race motors in the business. Of course, building race motors for a living means racing is a must, and the Weller family lives up to the company name. Jason and his wife Corry pioneered the Weller Racing SR1 spec class in the Lucas Oil Off Road Southern California Regional, and Corry piloted their flagship SXS to victory in the latest race. Corry's main racing venture is the Pro 4 class in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, and her No. 18 truck now proudly dons a Lazer Star Lights setup. Learn more about Weller Racing at www.WellerRacing.com and www.CorryWeller.com. Follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wellerracingllc and www.facebook.com/corryweller18.

Funco Motorsports
Funco Motorsports has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Lazer Star Lights, and after years of installing lights on their builds the relationship has evolved into a professional sponsorship. One of Southern California's most popular sand rail shops, the "Fun Company" have built a company and a lifestyle around sand cars. Based in Rialto, CA, the George family has owned and operated Funco for more than 40 years, and the next generation of racers has emerged in cousins Garrett and Chad. Both are racing the Lucas Oil Pro Buggy class this year, and both are doing extremely well - Chad leads the points standings in his No. 42 buggy, while Garrett is close behind in second in the No. 71 rig. Round 9 & 10 at Glen Helen Raceway  |  August 1-2, 2014
Lazer Star Lights traveled out to Glen Helen Raceway this past weekend for the 9th and 10th Rounds of the Lucas Oil Off Road Championship. The Lazer Star crew supported Weller Racing and Funco Motorsports in the pits throughout the weekend.

Seeing race action for the first time since joining the Lazer Star Lights race program, Corry Weller got off to a bumpy start in Friday's Pro 4 main event. Weller was putting in solid laps before rolling her truck on the lap 12, ending her night early. Bruised ribs didn't stop her from competing the next day, however. Fighting through the pain, Corry got back on the track and once again fell victim to misfortune, this time dropping out mid-race due to a mechanical issue. Weller will be back in action in a few weeks in Sparks, NV, and will return to Glen Helen on September 6th for Round 6 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Southern California Regional in the SR1 class.

Funco Motorsports enjoyed a very successful race weekend in the Pro Buggy class. In Friday night's action, Garrett George emerged from the 14 lap scramble at the front of the pack, marking Garrett's second Pro Buggy win of the season. Chad joined his cousin on the podium with a 3rd place finish, giving Funco a pair of top finishes to celebrate. On Saturday it was Chad who led the way for Funco, notching his second podium in as many days with a 2nd place finish. Garrett followed in 5th. Chad is currently leading the Pro Buggy competition in the championship points race by a good margin, touting four race wins while making the podium in each race. Garrett sits in second in the points chase.

Lazer Star Lights Heads to BITD Vegas to Reno

Lazer Star Lights is heading to Las Vegas this weekend for the Best in the Desert "Vegas to Reno" race. The Lazer Star crew will be on hand at contingency and tech inspection, and will be supporting their sponsored racers Matt Lovell, Derek and Jason Murray, and Bryan Buckhannon.

Dubbed "the Longest Off-Road Race in the United States," this point-to-point journey will take more than 300 competitors through 532 miles of rough Nevada desert. With only three events left on the 2014 BITD schedule, this race will be of the utmost importance for racers vying for class championships.

Kicking things off first thing Friday morning will be brothers Derek and Jason Murray in their Team Murray Racing #1917 Can-Am Maverick. While the Murrays have enjoyed a successful 2014 SCORE season, they are still looking to hit their potential in the Best in the Desert ranks.

Joining the Murrays in the UTV class is fellow Lazer Star racer Bryan Buckhannon in the #1927 Can-Am. Buckhannon comes from a storied career as a 4x4 quad racer in the GNCC series, but his recent foray into the UTV racing world has brought him out west to compete in the BITD.

Representing Lazer Star in the 7200 class of mid-size trophy trucks will be Matt Lovell. Piloting the Lazer Star Lights/Matt Lovell Racing #7244 Ford, Matt will be leaving it all out on the course in this race. Like with UTV counterparts, Matt will be making the most of his superior Lazer Star Lights setup throughout the race. Check out Matt's video recap of the Baja 500 here!

Amber lights up front improve visibility in the dusty conditions that these desert racers so often experience, while Lazer Star's high-powered LED light bars will guide the racers through the course once the sun goes down. It is in these conditions that Lazer Star Lights athletes shine, and at these times in the races that they outpace the competition.

Lazer Star Lights Lands a Vegas to Reno Podium

Lazer Star Lights racers took on the daunting Best in the Desert "Vegas to Reno" race this past weekend, and after more than 500 miles of desert dust Murray Racing managed a third place podium finish.

Murray Racing
The Murray brothers have enjoyed plenty of success so far in the 2014 SCORE series, but with 28 consecutive BITD finishes headed in the 2014 Vegas to Reno, there was still a lot left to prove. "We go into every race aiming for the win," says Derek Murray, "but after starting mid-pack and fighting through hours and hours of dust we're happy with a podium."

Derek started off in the driver's seat as team headed out of Vegas, 18 cars behind the leader. By the time Derek handed off to Jason, he had cut through the field all the way up to 7th place. Jason was comfortable behind the wheel in his first BITD race since returning from injury. He managed to pick off a few more spots and worked his way into 4th before Derek took over for the final stretch. Derek proved once again that Team Murray is most dangerous in the final stages of the race as he knocked off one more car on the way to claiming the last podium spot. This was the fourth podium finish in five Vegas to Reno races for Team Murray.

All in all Vegas to Reno was a pretty smooth race for the Murray boys in the #1917. "The Can-Am ran clean, we didn't really have any problems," Derek continued. "We finished before dark so that wasn't an issue, but we did put our Lazer Star Lights to use when passing bikes and quads. With the amount of dust that was in the air it was very important that we could not only see, but be seen by the other racers."

Matt Lovell Racing
After months of preparation, Matt Lovell and company rolled into Las Vegas for the 2014 Vegas to Reno race. Matt and his co-driver Paul Baker took off from the line at the back of the pack, so they had their work cut out for them from the start.

In the first 40 miles alone Lovell charged the #7244 Lazer Star Lights / Matt Lovell Racing mid-size trophy truck through a rocky and silty course, picking off racers left and right. "We were flying out there," Lovell said after the race. "The truck was running perfectly, the pit crew was extremely fast, everything was coming together." By the time they hit the halfway point they were up to 5th place, and then disaster struck. The truck's hydraulic throwout bearing failed, rendering the clutch pedal useless and leaving Matt unable to shift gears.

"Unfortunately it was just another stroke of bad luck, a part that never breaks took us out of the race," Matt said. With no spare part handy, the crew did everything they could to try to get back in the race, even going so far as driving town to town looking for a replacement at local auto shops. "The whole MLR crew did an amazing job. I'm really proud of how the entire program has grown, despite the obstacles we've faced this year."

Lovell and the Murray brothers will now prepare for the next race on the schedule: the BITD Bluewater Desert Challenge, October 10-12 in Parker, AZ. Lazer Star Racer Profile: Levi Shirley and Lucky Dog Racing

Lucky Dog Racing got its start in 2007, when Brian Shirley formed a team to support his passion for racing. His son Levi started racing short course in 2008, and together the Shirley boys built a race program with the help of family, friends, and the support of some great sponsors. When they ventured into the wild world of Ultra4 Racing they began looking for lighting sponsors to join the Lucky Dog Racing team. They began working with Lazer Star Lights and got to know the Scott family, and their relationship grew as the program began to pick up speed.

At that time the team ran a set of Dominator HIDs on the front to help light the way, and as LED fixtures grew more popular the Shirleys adopted a set of Lazer Star LX LED light bars for their 4400 class cars. These days Levi runs a 40” Discovery 10-watt LED light bar on the roof and a 12” LED bar on the grill. “We run the grill light bar pretty much all the time,” Levi says. “It really cuts through the dust and dirt and helps a lot with visibility, especially when rolling into the pits. When it gets dark you need lights that can keep up with your speed. Sometimes we’re running up to 100mph at night, and we’re able to do that because we are confident in our Lazer Star Lights.”

The 2014 Ultra4 Racing season has been very kind to Levi Shirley and Lucky Dog Racing, but their success has not come without adversity. Levi’s front end blew up 10 miles from the King of the Hammers finish line. Brian had to tow him across the line, finishing 20th and 21st. Levi bounced back in subsequent races though and solid finishes in recent rounds have put him in 3rd place in the combined championship standings.

Lucky Dog Racing also took their talents across the Atlantic to compete in the Ultra4 Europe series. Partnering with a UK company Off Road Armoury, the Shirleys built a brand new car with a lot of the parts supplied by their U.S. sponsors. The combination worked wonders as Levi went on to win the King of the Mountain race in Italy and the King of the Valley in Wales. A solid finish at the series finale King of Portugal race should put Levi in the top 5 in class standings at season’s end.

Levi attributes part of his success on the track to the team’s hands-on approach to prepping the cars. “In order to succeed you have to know the car 100%,” Levi says.  “We know these cars inside and out, every single component. No matter what I’m doing in a race I know exactly what kind of stress I’m putting on different components, and that confidence allows me to push the car to its absolute limit.” The Shirley boys do all of the work on their cars with just a few exceptions: they only perform minor maintenance on the transmissions and motors, and the chassis work is done by Campbell Racing in Phoenix.

The Shirley family lives and breathes off-road. Back at home in Dodge City, Kansas stands the brand new 12,000 square foot Lucky Dog Racing shop. Levi rides dirt bikes and a Polaris RZR on local trails in his free time, and the family makes frequent trips to their Colorado cabin to go Jeeping. When they’re not busy traveling the world for off-road races, the family is hard at work running their trailer shop, where they also retail Lazer Star Lights.

The focus right now for Lucky Dog Racing is the Ultra4 championship. Levi is within striking distance of the title, and with just a few races left it’s time to buckle down and focus on the task at hand. “It’s a growing sport,” says Levi. “We’re getting more racers, more sponsors, bigger crowds. It’s like a big Ultra4 family and we’re proud to be a part of it all.”

Lazer Star Lights Racer Levi Shirley Takes Third at 2015 King of the Hammers

Lazer Star Lights sponsored racer Levi Shirley wowed King of the Hammers spectators and worldwide audience as he came across the line in third place in the premier 4400 pro class race. Shirley was one of just 17 out of more than 100 drivers to complete the course in the allotted time, and the only solo driver to do so.

The King of the Hammers has quickly grown into one of the biggest off-road events of the year, and is widely regarded as one of the toughest races in the world. Lazer Star Lights sponsored racer Levi Shirley didn’t let the build-up and celebration interfere with his focus and preparation. “All the time in the shop, the work with our sponsors,” Levi said after the race, “we put so much into this before we even hit the dirt. Other people might be there for different reasons, but we’re here to race.”

Despite what the results might lead you to believe, Levi’s day on the KOH course was anything but uneventful. “We had a little bit of bad luck here and there but overall it was a good day.” Levi had to battle some suspension issues throughout the race, making both the whoop-laden desert stretches and technical rock crawling sections extra difficult.

Still, Levi got off to a solid start, running in the front of the pack after the first lap through the major rock beds. Levi avoided the major traffic jam that built up on Jackhammer within the first hours of the race. “We really emphasized qualifying, and I qualified 8th which got me an early start. That lead over the rest of the cars really helped us get through the rock beds before they got too hairy.”

The next bit of bad luck came on lap two, when Levi was working on Wrecking Ball. “The car got wedged so I had to get out to run the winch line, but the winch wasn’t working,” Levi recalled. “I got through without winching and discovered the top half of the winch had broken off.” The Lucky Dog pit crew removed the broken winch at Pit 2A, and by the time Levi made it to Pit 1, the crew had repaired the winch with some parts borrowed from a spectator.

Fortunately for Levi and the other front runners, race coordinator Dave Cole made the decision to detour the race leaders on their second lap through the rock beds. By that time, Jackhammer had become a parking lot as roughly 50 cars either struggled to ascend the mountain or waited impatiently for the cars ahead to clear out. “My crew radioed me about the detour but I didn’t really understand what they were saying, the engine was loud and they were a bit garbled. I was a little surprised but relieved when I got to the checkpoint and Dave Cole explained that we were bypassing Jackhammer.”

In a race that requires so much winching, it seems odd that a racer would take on the challenge solo, with no co-driver to help run a winch line. “This was my 5th year running KOH, but the first time going solo,” Levi explained. “We actually built this car with the idea of running these Ultra4 races solo. This let us play with the geometry of the car, allowed us to make it a little narrower which makes for easier navigation through the rock beds. Most Ultra4 events don’t require quite as much winching, so we have a good setup going into the other races.”

At the end of the day, after 9 hours in the car battling for the top spots and fighting the menacing King of the Hammers course, Levi crossed the line in physical third place. Levi was confirmed as the official 3rd place finisher of the 2015 King of the Hammers, one of just 17 out of the roughly 130 entrants and the only solo driver to complete the course.

“I’m incredibly grateful to my sponsor Lazer Star Lights,” Levi said. “Their support means the world to me, and even though I finished before sundown, knowing that I have this light setup gives me extra confidence throughout the race.”

Levi will once again be racing both the East and West Ultra4 Regional Series this year, as well as the Ultra4 Europe Series. Lucky Dog Racing will next prep the Maxxis Tires car for the MetalCloak Stampede, held May 8-9 in Sacramento, CA. The team will then travel overseas for the first round of the 2015 Ultra4 Europe series in France May 22-24. Levi’s father and owner of Lucky Dog Racing, Brian Shirley, will also be participating in Ultra4 East Regional events this year. Lazer Star Lights Racers Ready for Mint 400

Lazer Star Lights sponsored racers are rolling into Las Vegas, NV this week in preparation for the Best in the Desert Mint 400. Known as "The Great American Off-Road Race," the Mint 400 will put Lazer Star sponsored race teams up against some of the best off road competition in the world as participants take on this challenging desert course.

Lazer Star Lights is proud to announce the renewal of several partnerships for the 2015 race season. Matt Lovell of Matt Lovell Racing and Dana Nicholson of Fleshgear/Fuel Off Road will represent Lazer Star in the trophy truck classes, while Jason and Derek Murray of Murray Racing and Bryan Buckhannon of Buckhannon Racing will compete in the UTV Pro class.

About Matt Lovell Racing:
Matt Lovell returns as Lazer Star's flagship racer in 2015, set to compete in the Lazer Star Lights / Matt Lovell Racing #7244 mid-size trophy truck. Though they faced much difficulty in several 2014 events, Matt and crew continued to work hard and made several necessary adjustments towards the end of the year that helped them earn a second place class finish in the Best in the Desert "Henderson 250" and season-ending victory at the SNORE "Rage at the River." Lovell looks to carry that momentum over to 2015 as he takes on the competition in Best in the Desert and select SNORE races.

About Fleshgear / Fuel Off Road:
Dana Nicholson has already accomplished plenty in the off road industry, but he's not resting on his laurels. The co-producer and founder of Fleshwound Films' Crusty Demons of Dirt video series and Fleshgear apparel company, Nicholson recently turned his attention to four wheels. Nicholson has raced in BITD and Lucas Oil events, so be on the lookout in 2015 for some updates from the Crusty Demon himself.

About Murray Racing:
The Murray Brothers are well-known in the world of UTV racing for their tenacity and competitiveness. Derek and Jason work hard to prepare for Best in the Desert and SCORE events, and as a result set high expectations for themselves. This winner's mentality paid off several times in 2014, as Murray Racing took the checkers in the SCORE Imperial Valley 250. The victory, in addition to several other strong finishes including 2nd in the San Felipe 250, earned the Murray Brothers 4th place overall in the 2014 SCORE UTV Class Championship. Murray Racing also finished 3rd overall in the 2014 BITD UTV Pro Championship. Their mission will be no different in 2015: win races and win championships. Their new turbocharged Can-Am Maverick X ds should help with that.

About Bryan Buckhannon:
Bryan Buckhannon has been a fixture in GNCC Racing since the mid-2000s, and since his first class championship in 2008 has dominated the 4x4 ATV competition. In total, Buckhannon has claimed six 4x4 Open championships, highlighted by his perfect season of 13 consecutive victories in 2013. In 2014, Buckhannon also ventured into UTV racing, participating in GNCC and select BITD events. Bryan is a pure competitor, and we look forward to seeing what this champion will do in 2015.

Lazer Star Lights Tackles The Mint 400

Lazer Star Lights rolled into Las Vegas, NV last week ready to take on the world famous Mint 400. As the third race in the 2015 Best in the Desert Series, the course proved to be one of the most rugged races ever for a lot of the teams. Battling an immense amount of carnage and difficult conditions, Lazer Star racers were able to pull through with an impressive pair of finishes.

Murray Racing
Starting at the line in a position of 21st out of 55 in the 1900 class, the Lazer Star Lights backed Murray Racing Can-Am pushed hard to advance in the first lap. Coming into the 2nd lap in 6th place, they showed high hopes at this point in the race for pulling off a podium finish. They slowly crept their way towards the front at 3rd place with about 2 miles left in the second lap, when their Can-Am Maverick went into "limp mode" due to a faulty throttle body wire causing the fuel management system to falter. They were able to avoid a DNF by crawling to the pits at a very limited pace of 5mph.

As the Murray Racing crew tore the car apart to troubleshoot the problem as quickly as possible, 6 cars had advanced positions in front of them, causing miss out on a chance at a podium finish. Derek and Jason finished out the race with an official 10th place finish. Murray Racing will be busy over the next few weeks as they head to the Baja Sur 500 in Cabo San Lucas on April 15th-19th and then to the Silver State 300 in Las Vegas, NV on May 1st-3rd.

Matt Lovell Racing
With the morning races out of the way it was time for the trophy trucks to strut their stuff. Following a race-ending mechanical issue in the Parker 425, the subsequent repairs, testing and preparation, Matt Lovell set his sights on the Mint 400. After the parade and a lengthy tech inspection, the Lazer Star Lights/MLR #7244 truck was ready to tackle the rugged desert terrain along with 52 other trucks.

Matt throttled forward into the first lap while the truck handled everything the rough course could throw at it. The truck was running in pristine condition as MLR incorporated a new cooling system on the bellhousing that kept temperatures 100 degrees lower than they were at Parker. Everything was going smooth until about mile marker 30, where a life threatening 2-Truck pile-up closed the race course while 2 Flight for Life helicopters rushed two of the racers off the course, You can read more here: http://www.gofundme.com/jpoole  This unfortunatley held up the MLR crew for over an hour. With dozens of cars lining up behind him, Matt knew he would have to give everything he had through the quickly deteriorating course to achieve a top 5 finish.

Holding off all but one of the 50 cars behind him, he was able to cut through the dust to achieve his goal. Accumulating a total of 5 bent wheels, Matt was glad to even finish on what he called the "toughest race I've ever raced." Because of the hold at the wreck site, he ended up completing about 80% of the race at night. "The Lazer Star Lights definitely gave us an edge on the track. I had no need to even utilize the top row light bar because the bottom bar was cutting through the dust more than I could have hoped for. The night came but we did not get any slower because of Lazer Star." Matt Lovell Racing is currently prepping the Lazer Star Lights equipped trophy truck for the "Longest Off-Road Race In The United States": the BITD Vegas To Reno, scheduled for August 13-15.

Lazer Star Lights Awarded Patent for Light Bar Innovations

Lazer Star Lights was recently awarded patent number 8974102, 2015, which protects Lazer Star’s intellectual property of a number of innovative solutions for LED light bars.

A drawing from Lazer Star's recent patent filings.

Foremost among the patent’s claims is the unique power design of Lazer Star’s light bars: power input is built into both end caps on the light bar so it can be powered from either side to accommodate your vehicle. This design allows allows multiple bars to be connected, or “daisy chained,” utilizing the power input on the opposite end.

Lazer Star's technology allows for multiple light bars to be "daisy chained" together with a single power supply.

The design also reflects an industry first for Lazer Star: a color-swapping light bar. The Racer Special LED bars allow for multiple, switchable colors in a single LED bar. In addition, the patent recognizes two further innovations from Lazer Star: the lights are compatible with both AC and DC power, and the LED light bars can be mounted in three different ways.

Side mount position Bottom mount position Rear mount position

“Lazer Star Lights has long been an innovator in aftermarket lights,” said Lazer Star Vice President Ron Scott. “It’s a testament to the creativity of our staff and engineers to have these latest developments officially recognized and protected with this patent. We strive to produce innovative designs using quality components, and we are dedicated to continue pioneering lighting technology.”

This patent is not the end as Lazer Star has filed for continued improvements and new technologies in their family of LED light bars. Look for more innovations in the near future.

All of the patent information, as well as descriptions of the products that utilize the proprietary technology recognized in the patent, can be found in the new 2015-2016 Lazer Star Lights catalog. Click here to view the catalog online or emailinfo@lazerstarlights.com to request a print copy be mailed to you.

Lazer Star Lights Sponsored Murray Racing Takes Second at Baja 500

The Baja 500 is always one of the most exciting events of the year in the off-road racing world, and with the growing popularity of UTV racing this year’s event had the most-ever UTV entries in SCORE International history. 23 UTVs started the race in hopes of claiming some Baja gold, but only 11 finished the diverse and challenging course.

Lazer Star Lights sponsored racers Jason and Derek Murray headed down to Ensenada, Mexico with their eyes set on the ultimate prize: a Baja 500 victory. Jason started the day behind the wheel of Murray Racing’s turbocharged Can-Am Maverick, and was the second UTV off the line. The rough Baja course took its toll early on, however, damaging a wheel and causing Jason to lose some of his early lead. Team Murray got going again and Jason once again worked his way up to the front, running neck and neck with the leader in the first stages of the race.

Before long the tricky terrain intervened once again, this time tipping the Murray Racing Can-Am onto its side in a silt bed. Jason was running in 5th or 6th place as he hit the 100-mile mark, but he continued charging hard through a rough and rocky section of the course as he headed for the pit where Derek would take over.

Another mechanical issue would further slow the Murray boys down, but as dusk gave way to night Derek took the driver’s seat and put his Lazer Star Lights LX LED light bars to work. “As soon as the sun went down, we knew we had the advantage,” Derek Murray said after the race. “The sheer power and range of our Lazer Star Lights gives us the confidence to push the limits even at night, when other racers might be letting up.”

Derek moved back up to the front and battled with the leader all night. Derek would be slowed by one final mechanical issue, but by the time the finish line was in sight he was right on the tail of the lead UTV. Derek crossed the line around 2:30am, and knowing that adjusted time and penalties were in play was uncertain of his team’s status until it was later announced that Murray Racing was the official 2nd place finisher.

“The course was very diverse this year, with a lot of different sections,” Murray continued. “We had some sand whoops, some rocky, technical sections, and some fast rally racing type sections. We always aim for that 1st place trophy, but I’m proud of our performance and the hard work our crew put in.”

Next up for Murray Racing is the Best in the Desert “Vegas to Reno” in August. The Murray brothers will then attempt to add precious points to their SCORE International season tally at the Imperial Valley 250 in September.

Derek West Extends Top 5 Finish Streak in Nitto National Series

Consistency is key; Top 5 finishes in every race so far this year

The Jimmy's racing team had a rough start when the front drive shaft flew out at a speed close to 100 mph on the back stretch. The damage included a crushed exhaust system which would have to be fixed. The team rushed to replace the drive shaft and fix the exhaust to get on the track for qualifying. With just a few minutes to spare the team had the car fixed and Derek was on the track and qualified in the fifth spot. In the first heat Derek started 3rd and was looking great until a sensor wire came loose from the engine, which then wrapped around the drive shaft and took the lower engine harness wiring with it. Again, the #20 car was towed back into the pits to be repaired. This put the team in the last chance qualifier race (LCQ) fighting for a chance to make the main race. Starting 3rd in this heat as well Derek quickly made it to the front only to have some more problems forcing him to make a quick pit stop. Once the issue was addressed Derek was back on track and pushing hard to catch up as the entire field had passed by. Derek managed his way back up to the front of the pack to finish 3rd which would advance him to the main race.

The Nitto Tire/ NorthStar Battery car was in the 39th position, the second to last spot. The race leader was starting three and a half minutes in front of Derek with the staggered start. "I was just determined to catch as many of the racers in front of me as I could and still keep the car together so I could get a decent finish. During the last hour of the race, the track conditions were brutal!", said Derek. The race lasted for a little over 2.5hrs and at the end Derek and team had secured a 5th place finish. This would be enough to increase their 1st place lead in the Nitto national points championship as well as the move into 2nd in the western division.

Lazer Star Lights Sponsored Murray Racing Team Takes Silver at Vegas to Reno

Dubbed the longest off-road race in America, the Best in the Desert Racing Association’s “Vegas to Reno” is a grueling 545-mile journey through the Nevada desert. The rough and dusty course knocked dozens of competitors out of contention, but both Lazer Star Lights sponsored teams persevered through the conditions to claim impressive finishes in their classes.

Murray Racing  |  Pro UTV  |  #1917
Brothers Derek and Jason Murray are well-respected in the racing community. Their dedication to hard work and preparation has not only earned them a good reputation, but it’s also resulted in some excellent racing performances over the past several years. However, after rough outings at the Mint 400 and Silver State 300, the Murray Brothers were looking to bounce back and put in the podium performance they know they are capable of producing.

Derek started out behind the wheel in the 20th position. As he headed north for the first pit the Murray Racing Can-Am Maverick Turbo suffered a flat tire. At this early stage of the race, the repair time cost the team some precious time and positions. To make matters worse, another mechanical slowed the team down at around the 35-mile mark. “At that point I decided to drive smarter and just focus on making progress through the course,” Derek said after the race. “It was very dusty and the course was gnarly, so we stayed within the car’s limits but still pushed the pace.”

Derek made good progress during the rest of his leg, and passed the baton to Jason at Pit 8. As the sun went down, Jason knew he and his team stood at an advantage. Temperatures were dropping, meaning they could push their Maverick Turbo even harder without having to worry as much about overheating. “Our Lazer Star Lights setup was our other big advantage after sunset,” Derek explained. “While many drivers are backing off a little bit, we charge hard in the dark and use this opportunity to overtake the field.”

Jason crossed the line at around midnight, and Murray Racing claimed 2nd place in the Vegas to Reno race. Murray Racing is the only team to sit in the top 3 in both the SCORE and BITD UTV Pro standings, with throw out races. Derek continued, “The new turbo is a lot of fun. A ton of power and torque. After three races with it we feel like we’re getting it dialed in just right, so we’ll got out to the SCORE Imperial Valley 250 and try to defend our title.” The Murrays will then finish out the 2015 season with the BITD Bluewater and Henderson races as well as the SCORE Baja 1000.

Matt Lovell Racing  |  7200 Class  |  #7244
Matt Lovell represented Lazer Star in the field of mid-size trophy trucks, and “Everything went great,” Matt said after the race. “The truck was hammered after Mint so we took a lot of time prepping and basically rebuilding the truck.”

After months of preparation, Lovell who was one of very few drivers to  ironman this entire race solo, pushed the #7244 machine through the more than 500 miles of Nevada desert with relative ease. “It’s always a tough race and the course is always challenging,” Matt continued. “But this time through we were fortunate to not have any mechanical issues.” Lovell got stuck in a silt bed at around race mile 390, which sapped most of the energy he had left. That cost him almost an hour of time which equalled his time behind 3rd place. However, he  persevered with his Lazer Star Lights setup to continue charging hard after dark, coming in just before 1 am.

Lovell finished in a little over 14 hours, claiming the 7th place position in his class. “If it weren’t for the silt bed delay we were looking at a possible podium, but I’m proud of the crew and everyone who supports the team, and we were thrilled with how smoothly the whole race went.”

Lazer Star Lights Debuts New PreRunnerLED Line at SEMA Show

Lazer Star Lights will debut an all new line of LED light bars at the 2015 SEMA Show, set for November 3-6. The new line, called PreRunnerLED by Lazer Star Lights, will feature quality LED light bars built for recreational use and offered at an economical price point.

“Traditionally we have designed and built our lighting products to the highest possible standards,” said Lazer Star Vice President, Ron Scott. “The result has been a line of lights that perform reliably even through the extreme abuse of off-road racing, but we realize that many people do not require race-spec products for their intended uses. The PreRunnerLED line offers consumers a light bar that is reliable, looks good and is effective, but at a more economical price point than our flagship LX LED line.”

Lazer Star Lights Sponsored Driver Matt Lovell Finishes 2015 on Top

Lazer Star Lights’ Matt Lovell finished off the 2015 racing season in style this past weekend, winning the SNORE Rage at the River in dominant fashion.

As sweet as it is to head into the holidays atop the podium, the 2015 race season did not start out with such success. “We finished 2014 with the Rage at the River win,” Lovell said, “so the whole crew was really excited to hit the ground running in 2015.” The off-road racing gods had other plans in mind. The Matt Lovell Racing team headed to Arizona for the Best in the Desert season opener, the Parker 425. Matt’s day ended early with a DNF, and so it was back to the drawing board in preparation for the Mint 400 just a few months later.

After some repairs and upgrades, the MLR mid-size trophy truck was ready for everything the chewed up Mint 400 course could throw its way. Lovell overcame course delays and extremely rough terrain, calling this “the toughest race I’ve ever raced.” Through it all, Matt finished the 2015 Mint 400 in 5th place in the 7200 class.

Next up was the BITD Vegas to Reno, dubbed “the Longest Off-Road Race in the United States.” After some substantial rebuilds following the Mint 400, Lovell was ready to traverse the state of Nevada. He was one of just a handful of drivers to ironman the entire race, and after 14 exhausting hours behind the wheel his Lazer Star Lights guided him across the finish line. Lovell battled back from a long delay in a silt bed to finish 7th in the 7200 class.

Lovell and company headed back out to Vegas for one more race, the Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiasts’ Rage at the River event. Lovell was the defending champ, and with two days of racing on a challenging course he knew this would require all of his focus and energy. On the menu: 5 laps on a 12.5-mile loop, with 387 total entries. A recipe for a seriously chewed up race course. On Day 1, Lovell started 3 wide off the line and battled back and forth with some other trucks before pulling away. Lovell’s lap times were all within a minute of one another, and this consistency paid off. Lovell won by nearly a full lap.

Sometime in the wee hours of the night, however, Lovell’s tools were stolen out of his truck. Already without any kind of pit crew for this event, Matt realized that any mechanical issues on the second day would likely knock him out of the race. The course had claimed quite a few vehicles on the first day, leaving a smaller field of competitors on Day 2.

Lovell started in the front and never looked back. Knowing he couldn’t afford any issues, Matt pushed the pace but made sure to drive smart and keep his truck on the course. He once again finished the race with a sizeable lead, and successfully defended his 2014 title to become the back-to-back Rage at the River Champion.

“No matter how much you prepare, how many upgrades or modifications you make to the truck, there will always be unforeseen challenges,” Lovell said, reflecting on his 2015 season. “I’m just so proud of my crew and thankful for all of my sponsors and supporters for sticking it out and helping me push through the obstacles. To cap off this season with a win is extremely rewarding for all of us.”

Lazer Star Lights and Murray Racing kicked off the 2016 racing season with a bang, taking 4th overall at the Best in the Desert Parker 250 and 3rd in the all new UTV Pro Turbo class. With a whole starting block full of turbo-powered machines, this new class will be exciting to watch as the season unfolds and Polaris and Can-Am square off in the battle for horsepower. The Can-Am Turbo is off to a good start, taking 3 of the top 4 positions in the Overall and sweeping the Pro Turbo podium. Although the Murrays took that 3rd spot in the class, Jason and Derek always have their eyes set on the that first place trophy.

Murray Racing finished the 2015 season in 2nd place in the SCORE International UTV class, and 3rd place in the Best in the Desert UTV Pro class. Jason and Derek were also recognized at the SCORE awards banquet with the Milestone Award, which is given to the team that finishes the most miles of all events in the season.

They also hold one of the longest running records for most consecutive BITD races finished, at 36. That's six straight seasons without a DNF.

Needless to say expectations are high for Derek and Jason Murray in 2016, and with the increased support of their sponsors, the new high-powered Can-Am Maverick Turbo and one of the best crews in all of desert racing, look for big things to come from the Murray Brothers this year.

Derek West King of the Hammers Race Report

Derek and team came ready for this race, very little work was required to be done on the car while on the lake bed. The focus was on getting just enough pre-running in and to be relaxed and ready for race day.

Pre-running the course.

The Jimmy's car was working great and there was not a single issue with the car while pre-running.

The #4420 car in the pits.

With all of the teams pre-running done early in the week Derek had time to spend with photographers and media, put the car on display and focus on a strategy for the race.

Friday Morning Derek and Art Richtmyre (co-driver) were in the second row for the start of the race.  Things were off to a great start until a coolant line ruptured around mile 15.  They both got out and began to fix the issue, by the time they had it resolved the whole field of Ultra4 cars had passed them.  Derek jumped back in with spirits high and began to pick cars off, getting back into the top 20 on the second lap.  During that lap the engine began to miss, Art called on the radio to have the crew change some plug wires at the main pit before the start of lap 3.  While in the pit with the engine shut off something happened and upon the re-start of the engine there was a violent backfire and the damage had been done.  The team had no choice but to call the race.  We believe it is possible that the fuel injectors filled the cylinders with fuel before startup causing catastrophic engine failure.  While the team is bummed for the DNF, we realize that this is part of our sport and we are determined and focused to come back strong for the next outing!

Lazer Star Lights is a proud sponsor of Derek West and Crush Motorsports Racing.

Lazer Star Lights Sponsored Team Murray Fights Back at UTV World Championship

The 2016 race season is heating up for the Lazer Star Lights sponsored team of Jason and Derek Murray. With their second Best in the Desert event in the books and a quick turnaround before the SCORE season opener, Team Murray is on the gas and looking to make an impact this year.

Last year’s UTV World Championship was the inaugural event, and this year’s race drew an even bigger crowd with even more excitement as more than 90 UTVs competed. The UTV Championship course is unique in that it is part stadium short course and part open desert racing. This makes for an entertaining spectator area around the short course section while throwing in all of the rough and unexpected terrain that the Nevada desert had to offer.

New to the BITD rulebook is a starting position procedure. The top 10 finishers in the previous race get to start in that order, which meant that the Murrays got to turn their 4th place overall finish at the Parker 250 into an early start ahead of the massive pack.

Murray Racing at the 2016 UTV World Championship

Derek Murray took off at the front of the pack with Jason as his co-driver, and the two worked their way into 3rd place in the first few miles. About 8 miles into the first lap, the Team Murray Can-Am Maverick Turbo experienced some mechanical issues, which required some extended repair work on the course. By the time they got up and running again, pretty much the entire field had passed them. In fact, the lead cars were now just a few minutes away from lapping them, which meant there was no time to waste if the Murrays were going to get back into the race.

For the next few laps around the course, Team Murray charged hard and made up time. They picked off car after car and made up as much time as possible, despite being further slowed by mechanical issues on lap 5 and again on the final lap.

Through all of this adversity Jason and Derek persevered, and continued fighting to the end. Their reward was an incredible comeback. Although they were at one point in the race at the back of the 90-car pack, Team Murray managed to finish the race in 6th place in the UTV Turbo Class and in 9th place Overall. This was the 40th consecutive BITD race that Team Murray has completed with no DNFs.

Though the updated series points have not yet been posted, Team Murray should be in the top 3 in the UTV Turbo standings based on the results from the first two races. While Derek and Jason set the bar high for themselves, it’s hard to be disappointed with such an impressive display of willpower and determination. Expect to see the Murray boys on the BITD and SCORE podium this season.

The next race up for Team Murray is this weekend, the San Felipe 250. With as short a turnaround as possible, it will be interesting to see how the Murrays are able to prep their Lazer Star Lights equipped Can-Am in time for the SCORE International season opener.

Murray Racing Takes Silver at San Felipe 250

The race season is really heating up for Derek and Jason Murray. Mere days after completing their 40th consecutive Best in the Desert Race at the UTV Wold Championship, the Murray brothers and their crew had to prep the race car and head down to Baja for the SCORE International San Felipe 250. Knowing how committed these guys are, we're not surprised that they pulled off the quick turnaround and totally rocked it in Mexico.

Derek and co-pilot Aaron Juarez got things started off, taking the Murray Racing Can-Am Maverick Turbo through the first 157 miles of the San Felipe course. At that point they were running in 2nd place, just a few minutes behind the leaders. Jason and co-pilot Monty Aldrich took over for the final 100 miles, charging hard in an attempt to catch the leader. As the sun set over the Mexican desert, Jason relied on his Lazer Star Lights LED light bars to pave the way for a final push.

Checkers were not quite in the cards for the Murray boys, however, as they crossed the line just a minute and change behind the leader. With adjusted times, they had secured 2nd place in the SCORE season opener, a great way to start off what will certainly be an exciting chase for the 2016 title!

Another quick turnaround is on deck for the Murrays as they prep the car for the BITD Mint 400, March 9-13 in Las Vegas. We'll be out at the Mint with the Lazer Star rig, so stop by for a special light bar giveaway and swag, and help us cheer on Derek, Jason and Matt Lovell in the Mint 400!

Lazer Star Lights Sponsored Racers Attack the Mint 400

Paso Robles, Calif. - March 18, 2016 - The Lazer Star Lights sponsored team of Jason and Derek Murray were back in action this past weekend as they took on the legendary Mint 400. It was a rough course that claimed many vehicles, but the Murray brothers’ commitment to consistency landed them a 4th place finish in the UTV Turbo class. Fellow Lazer Star racer Matt Lovell encountered a series of issues in the 7200 class, and was unable to finish the race.

Murray Racing

“Normally it takes three to four weeks to prepare for a race, and this was our third race in four weeks,” Derek Murray said after the race. Following the BITD UTV World Championship and SCORE San Felipe 250 in the preceding weeks, the Murrays and their crew worked night and day to get their Can-Am Maverick Turbo ready for an important Mint 400.

Derek started things off behind the wheel and within the first 30 miles was running up in the top five. With so little time to prep, the team’s strategy was to run a smooth race and stay within striking distance of the leaders. By the time Derek made it to the second of three laps, the course was deteriorated and was beginning to take its toll on the car. Derek backed off the pace a bit in an effort to avoid any mechanical failures, and handed off to Jason for the third and final lap.

Jason took the wheel in good position to make a run at the podium, however, the top teams had pretty clean races and did not create any opportunities for late passes. By that point, the car was losing some of its top speed, and after three challenging laps on a chewed up course Team Murray crossed the line in 4th place.

“All in all, we showed up prepared, the car ran well and we finished in the top 5 out of 76 UTVs,” Derek recounted. “Our goal is always to win, but all things considered we’re happy to finish the race and get some solid points. Now we finally have some time to break down the car and get it refreshed for the next race.”

This was the 41st consecutive Best in the Desert race that Team Murray has finished without a DNF. The strong effort puts them in 2nd place in the season standings, and the BITD Laughlin Desert Classic in May is next on the schedule.

Lovell Racing

By the time the morning races had come to an end, more than 200 vehicles had run the course. Matt Lovell and his crew had spent the two previous weeks getting the Lazer Star Lights equipped #7244 mid-size trophy truck ready for action, but nothing could prepare them for what was to come.

Lovell was first off the line in the 7200 class, but just a few miles into the race he and his co-driver realized they had gotten a flat tire at some point through a tight and rocky uphill section. When they went to change the tire, the jack handle broke off in Matt’s hand, the first of what would be several bizarre events. Shortly after changing the tire and getting back on course, Lovell’s truck got stuck atop a boulder. Upon jacking the truck to clear it from the obstruction, they discovered a gear oil leak. They made it to the pit and Lovell’s crew got to work cleaning up the damage.

After suffering another flat in the next section of the course, Lovell made it back to the main pit. By this point the course was turning into a junkyard, with trophy trucks and class 1 cars strewn about and suspension parts scattered on the course. They slowed their pace and focused on navigating the jagged rocks when they came upon a rolled class 1 car. As Lovell slowed down to help, a trophy truck came up along side of Matt’s truck, damaging the rear end and body work.

The co-driver of the stranded vehicle was badly hurt, so Lovell called in to have his crew call for a helicopter. Shortly after a BITD vehicle arrived and the helicopter was on its way to med-evac the injured racer. Lovell’s willingness to pull over to help saved several precious minutes in evacuating the injured racer.

Lovell returned to the course, and soon after the 3rd member started to give out. They pulled off to inspect and realized that the truck was simply thrashed from a combination of rocks and collisions with other vehicles. Matt started breaking the truck down as his crew went to retrieve a replacement part, but the damage was already done. Matt did what he could to get back to the pit, but by that time he was forced to withdraw.

Lovell has his work cut out for him with extensive repairs and rebuilding to do in preparation for his next race. Lovell may race the BITD Laughlin Desert Classic, and after that will set his sights on Vegas to Reno in August. That will be the last race with this truck, as Lovell will finish his spec Trophy Truck for the 2017 season.
